Health and Safety

UFCW Canada represents more than 250,000 members across Canada in various sectors ranging from packinghouse, poultry, warehouse, retail, health care, and office staff. Since all sectors must deal with a variety of challenges, health and safety remains one of the most prevalent aspects being address by employers, employees, and the union.

From health and safety committees, ergonomics, accident prevention and investigation, violence in the workplace, emergency preparedness, to Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) and technical training, we are committed to offering all levels of training to our members regardless of what job they do.

UFCW Canada is committed to:

• Working with our members and their local unions to ensure that workers' rights are protected and enforced under health and safety legislation.

• Educating our members to understand exactly what their rights are under the various occupational health and safety legislation across Canada.

• Assisting our local unions and their health and safety committees in both the education process and the enforcement of health and safety for our members.

2. Right to participate - in keeping your workplace safe and healthy, as well as identifying and reporting health and safety concerns to your health and safety committee, local union or supervisors.

3. Right to refuse -  to do unsafe work or handle an unknown chemical(s) that you have reason to believe dangerous to you and your co-workers, or if you have not been properly trained in how to handle or utilize emergency measures in case of exposure.
