Pam Butt, Local 1252

Chancellor Park Residence
St. John's, Newfoundland

Pam Butt is a mother of three, and a grandmother of one, who enjoys hiking and other outdoor activities.

Eight years ago Pam started her career at Chancellor Park — a seniors residence in St. John’s, Newfoundland, as a Personal Care Attendant.

As it is for many of our activists, Pam’s role began unintentionally. When Chancellor Park organized with UFCW Canada Local 1252, a co-worker recognized Pam’s leadership skills and encouraged her to run for the Unit Chair position.

That led Pam to participate in the collective bargaining process. Education offered by Local 1252 also made her more aware of Health & Safety regulations and the importance of their enforcement. Pam’s involvement in labour related committees such as the Newfoundland Federation of Labour Women’s Committee also broadened her sense of social impact and responsibility that unions have within their community.

All of her experiences as a union activist have given Pam the confidence to affect change within her workplace, her union— and that confidence has spilled over to other parts of her life.

The lasting friendships and memories that have resulted from Pam’s involvement are a personal bonus. She still fondly remembers an evening in Winnipeg during a UFCW Canada Women’s conference being up on stage with other delegates from Newfoundland, singing up a storm.

We love you Pam, but don’t quit your day job.
