Baking the way for Haiti relief

UFCW Canada members at the Maple Leaf Poultry plant in Brampton, Ont., cooked up some good news for Haiti earthquake relief recently. UFCW Canada Local 1000A members at the facility just north of Toronto held a bake sale and 50/50 draw that raised $6,800 for aid to Haiti following the devastating Jan. 12 earthquake. The total was matched by employer Maple Leaf Foods, bringing the total donation to $13,600.

Pictured from left to right are George Cappuccitti, plant manager; Joe Costa, production manager; Local 1000A members Maria Cabral and Isabel Dantas; and Dina Greco, Maple Leaf HR manager. The overall total realized was greatly enhanced when Isabel, who won $1,400 in the 50/50 draw, donated it back to the fundraiser.

“As UFCW Canada members, we know that when you join together you can make good things happen,” says Maria, who is the union’s Chief Steward at the fresh poultry processing facility. “The bake sale was a great success and we were happy to make a difference in helping the people of Haiti.”
