UFCW Canada Local 12R24’s already extensive network of more than 60 Members Assistance Program (MAP) workplace representatives grew by nine on March 31 when the new peer-to-peer volunteers completed training and were certified at a session in Niagara Falls, Ont.

“It is vital that the local union is there for members both on and off the job,” says Local 12R24 President Rob Edwards. “That’s why we provide special programs to assist our members and families in areas of life that fall outside the collective agreement.”

Local 12R24 members work across Ontario in The Beer Store retail locations as well as in distribution and recycling operations. The local union’s Members Assistance Program began chiefly as a work-stress counselling program, but rapidly grew into one of the most comprehensive programs of its kind, providing services in areas such as family, relationship, and parenting concerns; crime-related trauma; stress and harassment, on or off the job; alcohol and substance abuse; financial and retirement planning; and legal and credit counselling referrals.

While peer-to-peer assistance is available across the province – usually in the form of referral to appropriate local help agencies – 24-hour confidential service is also a toll-free call away, with access to professional counselling programs.
