Local 1000A welcomes Richtree workers

UFCW Canada Local 1000A has been certified as the bargaining agent for 53 food services workers at a Richtree Market Restaurants location in Ottawa.

“The Richtree workers came together quickly after deciding organizing was the best way to fix a long list of workplace issues,” says Local 1000A growth program coordinator Jonathan Lobo. “Like so many workers who contact us, the main issues for the Richtree workers focused on basic fairness, and they rightly decided the best way to achieve justice in the workplace is through collective bargaining.”

Richtree Market Restaurants Limited is a privately owned food services business that operates six marché-type stores in Toronto and Ottawa. In 2009, the company employed a total of 500 employees and generated over $19.4-million in revenue.

“Local 1000A welcomes the Richtree workers to the UFCW Canada family,” says Local 1000A President Kevin Corporon. “The fact that they reached out to UFCW Canada says a lot about the excellent work our activists are doing in their communities to make sure workers know they have rights, that they’re stronger together, and that the union is all about helping them to stand up for a better future.”
