Commemorative “Quetzal”

Commemorative “Quetzal” issued to mark campaign progress

UFCW Canada and the Agriculture Workers Alliance have produced this special “Quetzal” note to commemorate a campaign victory after the IOM announced that the $400 “security deposit for participation in the program is no longer requested,” for Guatemalan migrant workers who come to Canada under the Temporary Foreign Workers program.

The 5,000 Quetzal note symbolizes the amount of money Guatemalan workers were forced to pay as a deposit to be part of the program.

That money will now stay in their pocket, to help them and their families.

The IOM decision came in the wake of the UFCW Canada and Agriculture Workers Alliance (AWA) campaign — No More Injustice and Oppression Against Migrants! — demanding respect for Guatemalan migrant workers in Canada.

The campaign will continue until the rampant exploitation of Guatemalan migrant workers under Canada’s the federal Temporary Foreign Workers Program ends.
