Activists to gather November 2nd at 12th Annual Chávez Awards

Honourees for the 12th Annual César Chávez Black Eagle Awards have been announced. The César Chávez Black Eagle Awards — presented by UFCW Canada and the Agriculture Workers Alliance (AWA) — recognize exceptional activists for their innovative social justice work on behalf of Canada's agriculture workers.

This year's presentation and award dinner will be held on Wednesday, November 2nd at the Ontario Federation of Labour building in Toronto, where the following eight honourees will receive their awards for activism in one of six categories:
 

Agriculture Worker:

Mindy Leng, leader of the Rol-Land Farms organizing committee

Thomas Dunmore, Supreme Court challenger, Highline Mushroom Farm

Politics:

Raj Chouhan, MLA Burnaby-Edmunds, NDP B.C.

International:

Ambassador Gary Doer, past-Premier of Manitoba

Labour:

Pierre Gingras, past-President of TUAC Canada Local 501

Culture:

Carole Condé and Karl Beveridge, Artist-Activists

Religious:

Father Hernán Astudillo, Spiritual leader for San Lorenzo Church, Toronto

The awards event also marks a celebratory milestone for the AWA which has now surpassed 10,000 members, making it the largest agriculture workers organization in North America.
