Remembering Jack

  31/08/ 2011

On Saturday, August 27, Canadians paid tribute to the life of Jack Layton at Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto.

The celebration was an appropriate tribute to a leader who had been able to touch so many Canadians with his message of hope and optimism.

But in death Jack encouraged all of us to face the challenges before us. From the overwhelming nature of climate change, to the unfairness of an economy that excludes so many of us from sharing in our country’s wealth, Jack believed in our ability to make change.

As Stephen Lewis said in his eulogy of Jack, “If there is one word that might sum up Jack Layton’s unabashed social democratic message it would be generosity”. Jack Layton wanted, in the simplest of terms, a more generous Canada.

UFCW Canada members and families had a great friend and ally in Jack Layton and we owe it to him to continue the fight for a better Canada that leaves no one behind.
