NDP Leadership candidate Thomas Mulcair gaining momentum as we head toward Convention

With less than a week to go before Canada’s New Democrats elect a new leader,it is becoming increasingly apparent that the UFCW Canada endorsed candidate Thomas Mulcair has the greatest momentum as we gear up for the leadership convention, which will be held in Toronto from March 23 to 24.

Not only has Mulcair been endorsed by former leadership candidates Robert Chisholm and Romeo Saganash, but two additional unions have followed UFCW Canada’s lead in endorsing Mulcair. The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and the 10,000 member strong Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 113 in Toronto have both declared their support for Mulcair as the best choice for moving the NDP forward.

Thomas Mulcair is clearly the best choice for UFCW Canada members and working people throughout Canada.  Not only will he fight for a fairer and more equitable Canada, but his labour policies show that he is on the side of labour. In his labour policy paper, Thomas pledges as Leader he will continue to oppose back-to-work legislation, and fully support card-check certification and the enactment of first contract arbitration. When Mulcair becomes Prime Minister he will also work to ensure companies involved in foreign takeovers meet the employment commitments they've promised.

With widespread agreement in the media that Mulcair is the next NDP Leader, many are now looking beyond the convention to March 26 when Thomas could have the first opportunity to square off against Stephen Harper in the House of Commons.

With Mulcair as the Leader of the Official Opposition we begin the next stage of our proud history by taking the NDP from a government in waiting to the Government of Canada.
