Robert Ziegler, the recently retired president of UFCW Canada Local 832 has been honoured as the 2012 recipient of the Stanley Knowles Solidarity Award. The award is presented at each convention of the Manitoba NDP to a trade unionist who has shown a deep commitment to working people and social justice.

Brother Ziegler received the award during the opening night of the Manitoba NDP convention. Manitoba Federation of Labour President Kevin Rebeck along with Manitoba Premier Greg Selinger presented the award to the former Local 832 president who retired last October, after leading Local 832 as president for nine years, and after more than 30 years of service to UFCW Canada and the Manitoba labour movement.

Keeping to his tradition of short speeches, Brother Ziegler told the packed convention that he was honoured to receive this award from the Manitoba NDP, and highlighted the labour movement's role in the party. “We may not always agree on things, it's much like a family with disagreements from time to time, but we will always work together for the province, and I’ve always said there is no better place to live and raise a family in than here in Manitoba,” said Ziegler.
