Tell the City of Toronto "NO" to Holiday Shopping! Right now the City of Toronto is considering a business-backed proposal that would allow retail stores to stay open for business on the current provincial Statutory Holidays. That includes Christmas Day, New Year's Day, Family Day, Good Friday, Easter Sunday, Victoria Day, Canada Day and Labour Day. It's unfair, unjust, anti-family and just plain greedy. UFCW Canada members and all retail workers need the break of Statutory Holidays to rest and spend much needed time with their families and friends as much as any other worker. The City of Toronto is considering a business-backed proposal that will force retail workers to work on the current nine provincial Statutory Holidays. Your employer wants you to work Christmas, Canada Day, Thanksgiving, Victoria Day and any other Holiday they want to stay open.
It's unfair, unjust, anti-family and just plain greedy. Retail Workers need these Statutory Holidays as much as any other worker — to provide much needed time with their families and friends. Even Mayor Rob Ford takes time off on statutory holidays. Here’s what he told the CBC when questioned about attending the Pride Parade: "No, I'm not attending Pride. It's on Canada Day. I'm going up to the cottage with my family like I've done for as long as I can remember,"
Every retail worker deserves the same holidays as the Mayor and Toronto City councilors, so Tell the City of Toronto "NO" to Holiday Shopping! Here's how:
Each City of Toronto Councilor is responsible to listen to their constituents. Call or e-mail them to let them know that you do not want to work on the nine Statutory Holidays. Tell your friends, coworkers and neighbours to also join the e-mail campaign. Find the contact information for your city councilor at www.toronto.ca/councillors . |
