Target Canada headquarters the target of August 22 rally

On August 22 at 11 a.m., activists, Zellers workers, and community allies from across Ontario and the Greater Toronto Area will converge on Target's Canadian headquarters in support of over 10,000 Zellers Workers in their fight for fairness at Target.

The rally is aimed at Target's plan to convert over 130 Zellers stores to Target locations without respecting the loyalty, long-term service and collective bargaining rights of many Zellers workers. Across Canada, all Zellers workers are being terminated and forced to reapply for their jobs — with no guarantee they will be rehired. Many of the workers have decades of experience, but that means nothing to Target, which has told the workers that even if they are rehired, they will be starting at the bottom all over again.

"Target's plan to trash 10,000 Zellers workers is an assault on the workers and on dozens of Canadian communities," says UFCW Canada national representative Kevin Shimmin. "The Target executives can hide in their headquarters, but that doesn't disguise their complete disregard for the lives and futures of Zellers workers and their families and that is a message they won't escape on August 22."

The mass demonstration on Wednesday, August 22, will commence at 11 a.m., at Target Canada's head office at 5570 Explorer Drive, Mississauga, Ontario, L4W 5N1. Activists are encouraged to bring as many friends, supporters and community allies as possible.
