UFCW Canada Migrant Workers Scholarships recipients announced

Toronto – April 8, 2015 – Twenty young people between the ages of four and 25-years-old, from across the Global South, are the latest recipients of the UFCW Canada Migrant Workers Scholarships. Each recipient was nominated by a family member working as a migrant or temporary foreign worker in Canada.

Since its launch in 2010, under the banner Education Has No Borders, 90 recipients have been awarded scholarships through this important initiative, to help pay for school supplies and tuition. 

The 2014 UFCW Canada Migrant Workers Scholarships recipients are:

Peter Gesanda Mainye, age 18, Kenya; Joao Victor Alonso De Santana, age 12, Brasil;  Evelina Butchenko, age 10, Ukraine; Daniel Landaverde, age 6, El Salvador; Marygrace Balcos Nota, age 15, Philippines; Chenxi Yang, age 8, China; Wendoline Pineda Cortes, age 15, Mexico; Aylin Dominick Rodriguez, age 14, Honduras; Jackelinne Fabiola Capen Ajbal, age 15, Guatemala;  Sonia Aurora Can Pop, age 9 ,Guatemala; Aeron Dale Olita-Totoy, age 19, Philippines; Yeimi Margeli Solis-Contrercis, age 16, Mexico; Julio Cesar Garcia Luna, age 14, Mexico; Talicia Brown, age 11, Jamaica; Marcel Sinclair,age 9, Jamaica; Rosaiba Elizabeth Ajtzac Cuxil, age 9, Guatemala; Treisy Jazmin Chavez Aguilar, age 17, Guatemala; Lidia Mercedes Sanic Perez, age 7, Guatemala; Jose David Xon Argueta, age 5, Guatemala; and Fabian Hernandez Hernandez, age 13, Mexico.

“Congratulations to all the recipients and their families,” says National President Paul Meinema. “We are grateful for the tremendous contribution that migrant and temporary workers make to our community, and for the opportunity to assist the recipients achieve their scholastic goals.”

The UFCW Migrant Workers Scholarships program is up and running for 2015.  Any migrant or temporary foreign worker in Canada can nominate a family member in their home country for the scholarship. The nominee must be between 4 and 25 years of age; attending or planning to attend an educational institution;  and is either the child, grandchild, sister, brother, niece or nephew of the nominator.
