UFCW Canada – BDM Scholarship Winner: Kelly Yu, UFCW 1869

Winnipeg – April 11, 2015 – Kelly Yu is one of eighteen UFCW Canada – BDM Scholarship winners for 2014. Currently in her first year of the Practical Nursing Program at Assiniboine Community College, Kelly is a proud UFCW Canada Local 1869 member who works at the St. Boniface General Hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Sister Yu had the following to say about winning a UFCW Canada – BDM Scholarship:

"I'm very happy to be a recipient of this scholarship. Ever since I was a little girl, I have always found joy in caring for the people around me. I'm currently working in the health care field as a health care aide. A few years back, my grandma passed away from cancer. Seeing how the nurses took care of her really opened my eyes to helping others. By completing my Practical Nursing diploma, I feel that I will not only be able to further my career, but I will also pay tribute to the nurses who took care of my grandma. Being a nurse means everything to me."

Every year UFCW Canada offers a total of eighteen union scholarships worth $1,000 each to members, their spouses, and dependants for post-secondary education. The BDM scholarship was created to honour past UFCW leaders William Beggs, Fred Dowling, and Roméo Mathieu.
