Brother Kowal had the following to say about winning a UFCW Canada – BDM Scholarship:

"Resources like the UFCW Canada – BDM Scholarship help members improve their lives. I feel very fortunate to have been a UFCW member from high school all the way through graduate school, using my job to fund my education for nearly a decade. Because of the fair wages and accommodating schedules that my Local Union has negotiated for members, I am on track to graduate from school debt-free and ready to launch my career with the United Nations as an international civil servant. I would thank UFCW Canada for all of the support."

Every year UFCW Canada offers a total of eighteen union scholarships worth $1,000 each to members, their spouses, and dependants for post-secondary education. The BDM scholarship was created to honour past UFCW leaders William Beggs, Fred Dowling, and Romeo Mathieu.
