Local 248P shop stewards sharpen skills to help other members

Local 248P shop stewards sharpen skills to help other membersSaskatoon, Sask. – December 4, 2015 – Seventeen UFCW Canada Local 248P shop stewards are now better prepared to help other members on the shop floor after a day-and-a-half training session held at the local union’s Saskatoon centre. The sessions were facilitated by UFCW Local 248P President Pat Horbay and national representative Lily Olson.

“On behalf of the Local 248P Executive, I’m very proud and glad to have our shop stewards attend the training so we can support and help our members in their workplaces,” said President Horbay. “With this training we now have more voices that can be heard to better assist everyone.”

Note-taking, the role of a steward, and knowing the Six W’s of a grievance were covered. Many of the stewards are new to their role representing members at three different Saskatoon workplaces: the Maple Leaf McLeod Plant, the Maple Leaf Distribution Centre, and at Star Egg. The training also focused on Unions 101 and debunking the myths that the shop stewards hear from time to time in the workplace.

“Thanks to the national office for all of the help and support,” said Brother Horbay. “This is great start that will lead to more training for our shop stewards.”
