Saskatchewan activists prep for provincial election

Saskatoon, Sask. – March 29, 2016 – UFCW Canada Local 1400 activists from across Saskatchewan recently gathered for political action training in the run up to the 2016 Saskatchewan provincial election.

“We need to be involved in political action in order to elect a labour-friendly government, and to ensure that the issues important to working families have a strong voice in the legislature,” said UFCW Local 1400 president Norm Neault.

The training was focused on canvassing, labour history, and a thorough understanding of how a electoral campaign workers. The activists had the opportunity to canvass door-to-door, introduce their local candidate to their neighbours, and learn from doorstep conversations what voters were concerned about. The participants were enlightened and eager to do their part going forward.

Activists also heard from NDP candidates running in their area, including Nicole Sarauer running in Regina Douglas Park; Vicki Mowat, running in Saskatoon Fairview; and NDP MLA Danielle Chartier, running for re-election in Saskatoon Riversdale.

The training took place in Regina and Saskatoon from March 14 to March 17. “The stories and experiences shared by the participants really showed that the grass roots labour movement continues to be strong,” says UFCW Canada national representative Joe Pereira, who helped facilitate the sessions. “The activists showed they are eager to help elect worker-friendly candidates to protect and advance the rights of workers and their families across Saskatchewan.”
