Security members proudly prep for Toronto Pride Parade – UFCW 333

Toronto – June 30, 2016 – UFCW Canada Local 333 members who will be working as security guards at Toronto’s Pride Parade have proudly prepared for their assignment through special diversity training workshops.

Local 333 coordinated the workshops with G4S – the security company which employs the members assigned to the July 3 event. In addition to reviewing the security logistics for one of the largest LGBTQ events in North America, the special full-day workshops focused on the history of the Pride movement, an on gender diversity and inclusion training to ensure the event is a safe, welcoming, and inclusive celebration for everyone in attendance.

“As a progressive union, we’re proud of the tremendous commitment and professionalism Local 333 members who work in the security sector provide,” says UFCW Canada Local 333 Secretary-Treasurer Jeff Ketelaars. “The workshops support our progressive agenda to build even stronger bridges with all the communities and members we serve, including our LGBTQ brothers and sisters.”

UFCW Canada Local 333 represents thousands of members employed in the security sector across Ontario.

“I think the leadership shown by Local 333 and the members is truly remarkable,” says Jeremy Dias, who led the workshops and is the director of the Canadian Centre for Gender and Sexual Diversity. “It speaks to a level of cultural sensitivity and being an ally in helping to move things forward through dialogue, awareness, and solidarity.”

The workshops also included a presentation and information sharing session by representatives from The 519, a landmark community centre in the neighbourhood that is the heart of Toronto’s LGBTQ community, and central to Pride Festival events throughout the July 3^rd weekend.

“I’m proud to be part of a union that is so inclusive and cares about the rights of everyone, including the LGBTQ community,” said Adnan Khan, one of dozens of Local 333 members who attended the sessions.

“We’ve had nothing but positive feedback,” says Brother Ketelaars. “The members have said they were grateful for the training and are looking forward to contributing to a great event.”
