UFCW Canada activists celebrate at Labour Day events across Canada

Toronto – September 6, 2016 – UFCW Canada activists were out in full force at Labour Day events across the country this past weekend, gathering with family members and community allies at a number of marches, picnics, and parades to honour the past achievements of workers and to celebrate Canada’s labour movement.

In Ontario, UFCW Canada activists led the way at the country’s largest Labour Day parades in Toronto and Hamilton, while also participating in events in Ottawa, London, Windsor, and other municipalities throughout the province.

In Western and Atlantic Canada, activists and family members marked the celebration at various community events, including several Labour Day parades, picnics and gatherings.

In Quebec, activists traditionally gather to honour the accomplishments of workers and the labour movement on May 1, International Workers Day, also known as May Day.

"Labour Day is a chance to reflect on the victories that workers and their unions have achieved over the years, while renewing our commitment to fight for good jobs, safe workplaces, fair labour laws, and an equitable community,” said UFCW Canada National President Paul Meinema. “The rise of precarious work also means that we must redouble our efforts to help more workers join the union, so that every worker in Canada can enjoy the fair wages, benefits, and workplace respect that unionization provides.”
