UFCW Canada activists out in full force at Women’s Marches – January 21

Toronto – January 26, 2017 – UFCW activists and Local Unions were out in full force across Canada at marches and events held in solidarity with the Women’s March on Washington, January 21. The Canadian events were part of more than 380 marches and rallies held the same day around the world.

Participants of all genders, ages, and diverse backgrounds came together, calling for a more inclusive and equitable society for everyone.

“Alongside thousands of marchers in Winnipeg, I marched for justice and equity, and to call for an end to hate and discrimination,” says Nancy Quiring, UFCW Canada’s director for the Western Provinces, and chair of the UFCW Canada National Women’s Advisory Committee. Hundreds of other UFCW Canada women activists were joined by UFCW Canada brothers, friends and family members in Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa, Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Regina, Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver and other centres across the country.

Worldwide, it is estimated that more than 5 million people participated in the marches that came just a day after U.S. President Trump’s inauguration in Washington.

“The solidarity across Canada and around the world sent a very clear message that the politics of fear, division, and discrimination must be challenged everywhere,” says Paul Meinema, UFCW Canada’s national president. “The marches created tremendous momentum. Let’s build on that together, to advance even stronger as a community, and as a force for positive change.”
