Winnipeg – May 10, 2017 – UFCW Canada Local 832 recently welcomed over 250 members, allies, and community partners to their 2017 Activist Conference in Winnipeg. The theme of this year’s conference was "Taking Action."

Throughout the three-day conference, participants engaged in a variety of exciting workshops aimed at empowering conference-goers in their roles as shop stewards and activists.

Among the presenters were Esther Lopez, UFCW International Secretary-Treasurer; Heather Fraser, President and CEO of The NOW Group; and Jennifer Hollet of Twitter Canada.

"You could really feel the energy at this year's Activist Conference," says UFCW Canada Local 832 President Jeff Traeger. "It was great to see so many engaged members together in one place, learning how to make a difference in their workplaces and communities,” he adds.

The action-packed conference also featured a riveting performance called "Packingtown," which chronicles the history of one of Western Canada's now-defunct Packingtown districts, and the struggles that meat-packing employees experienced working there in the 1980s.

To close the event, participants heard from Gary Doer, the former Premier of Manitoba and the former Ambassador of Canada to the United States, who shared stories about his time serving in numerous government roles, and his experiences engaging with UFCW over the years.
