Retail Food Workers at IGA in Surrey, B.C. vote “Yes!” to UFCW Canada

Grocery store workers at the IGA location on Fraser Highway in Surrey, British Columbia, recently became the newest members of UFCW Canada Local 1518 by voting “Yes!” to Canada’s leading and most progressive voice for workers and their families.

Local 1518 reports that an application for certification was filed in November, and the B.C. Labour Board announced on December 3 that a majority of the grocery store workers voted in favour of the union.

“These new members joined UFCW Canada to have a voice at work, and to join hundreds of other Local 1518 members that work at IGA stores,” says Local 1518 President Ivan Limpright. “We’re really pleased to see these members having the advantages and protections that come with being in the union.”

Local 1518 expects the new IGA members to elect a union negotiating committee in the coming weeks and to begin negotiations with the employer as soon as possible.
