Saskatoon, Sask. and Toronto – June 26, 2017 – UFCW Canada activists from across Saskatchewan and Southern Ontario proudly celebrated diversity and equality at Pride parades in their provinces on the June 24 weekend.

In Saskatoon, UFCW Canada Local 1400 and Local 649 activists were out in full force on June 24, for the 17th Annual Saskatoon Pride Parade. They were joined by National President Paul Meinema, as the UFCW contingent proudly paraded through downtown Saskatoon, where a record crowd of more 10,000 people lined the streets.

"It was a tremendous opportunity to celebrate and march in solidarity with our LGBTQI2S members and community," said Brother Meinema."UFCW Canada is proud to honour the history, courage and contributions of all of those in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual, transgender, intersex, queer, questioning, and two-spirited communities.”

In Toronto, hundreds of thousands of people gathered along Toronto's Yonge Street on June 25, at one of North America's largest Pride events. The parade was a culmination of a number of festivities and celebrations over the month of June – Pride Month in Toronto.

UFCW Canada blue and gold were brightly on display as activists from Locals 175 & 633, Local 1006A, and the national office joined thousands of other parade participants in marching in solidarity with  members of the LGBTQI2S community. Throughout the Pride weekend, UFCW activists also operated the union's community action booth.

As Canada's leading and most progressive union, UFCW Canada was also active throughout the Toronto Pride Festival weekend, participating in numerous events such as the Trans and Dyke marches. Throughout the Pride season, UFCW Canada activists and Local Unions also participate in dozens of Pride events across the country.

UFCW Canada plays a leading role in advocating for full equality and opportunity for members of the LGBTQI2S community. As part of our commitment, UFCW Canada has worked with a number of organizations to develop new resources to promote inclusiveness, including guides to help members start their own Pride Chapters in their Local Unions and in their workplaces.
