Toronto, Calgary, Halifax and Ottawa – October 23, 2017 – This year's Light the Night season recently came to a close as thousands of participants from across Canada illuminated the night's sky during walks in Toronto, Calgary, Halifax and Ottawa in support of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada (LLSC).

In Toronto, activists from UFCW Canada Local 12R24, Local 1006A, and Local 175 & 633 joined over 8,000 participants at Nathan Phillips Square for an evening full of inspiration and hope. Participants at the Toronto walk raised nearly $1 million for the life changing work of the LLSC.

In Calgary, UFCW Canada Local 401 activists and family members carried illuminated lanterns through the Eau Claire Market. Each lantern symbolizing light in the dark world of cancer; red for supporters, white for patients and survivors, and gold to remember loved ones lost.

In Halifax, activists from the UFCW Canada Eastern Provinces Council (EPC) led the way for thousands of participants who gathered at Garrison Grounds on October 21 to help raise funds for the LLSC's vital patient support services, advocacy work, and research.

In Ottawa, activists and family members from UFCW Canada Local 175 & 633 and Local 1006A gathered at Lansdowne Park for a night full of fundraising to help improve treatments and find cures for various forms of blood cancers and to pave the way for scientific advances and breakthrough treatments like bone marrow/ stem cell transplantation and CAR-T immunotherapy.

For over three decades, UFCW Canada members and community allies have organized and participated in numerous fundraising activities for the LLSC – including raffles, community picnics, 50-50 draws, car washes, sports tournament, ride-a-thons, marathons, relays, and Light the Night walks. To date, UFCW Canada has raised over $38 million in the fight against blood cancers, making our union the LLSC's most valued partner.
