First contract for members at the Broadbent Institute – UFCW 1006A

Ottawa – February 22, 2018 – Workers at the Broadbent Institute recently ratified their first collective agreement, achieving a strong foundation for the future with wage gains, enhanced vacation time, and more.

Members at the Institute work in fundraising, communications, policy analysis, and advocacy for Canada’s leading progressive think tank and training institute.

Highlights of the new agreement include:

• The establishment of nation-wide recognition;

• Wage increases over the life of the agreement;

• Partial reimbursement for child care expenses in circumstances where a member is required to work overtime;

• Enhanced vacation time (4 weeks of vacation after one year of service);

• Negotiated pregnancy leave top-up;

• Language for sick days, personal days, and superior statutory holiday coverage;

• Leave of absence language for election leave for up to one term in office;

• Protected benefit levels; and

• A yearly retirement bonus.

The negotiating committee was led by UFCW Canada Local 1006A Union Representative Greg Penner, with support from UFCW 1006A Eastern Director Roland Lapins and member Michael Penny.
