Migrant Workers Scholarship nominator profile: Odilia Muj Saput

Toronto – December 13, 2018 – Wilfredo Alexander Muj Gonzalez is one of twenty winners of the UFCW Canada Migrant Workers Scholarship. Wilfredo is the son of Samuel Muj Saput, who works seasonally in Canada under the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP).

UFCW Canada recently interviewed Samuel’s wife, Odilia Muj Saput, for the Migrant Workers Scholarship profile series. Odilia says life has been difficult for herself and her children ever since Mr. Saput started working under the TFWP five years ago. However, she knows that Samuel is simply trying to provide for his family, and that the income he earns will ultimately help their children in the long run.

Odilia and Samuel’s youngest child, Wilfredo, is 11 years old. He was diagnosed with a liver disease at the age of 5. After consultations with many doctors, they were able to find medications that enable Wilfredo to live a healthy and normal life. The disease affects his vision and causes soreness in his legs, but despite these complications, Wilfredo is a high achiever. For example, he recently won a cross country competition and loves to explore art.

Wilfredo was thrilled to be chosen as a recipient of the UFCW Canada Migrant Workers  Scholarship. His mother says they will use the funds to help pay for Wilfredo’s education in Guatemala. Odilia likes to think of her husband’s work in Canada as an opportunity that will allow their children to achieve their dreams going forward, and says the scholarship money will help them immensely.

Since 2010, UFCW Canada has received tens of thousands of applications for our renowned Migrant Worker Scholarship program, and our union has awarded scholarships to dozens of children to benefit their educational pursuits here and in their home countries.

The deadline to apply for the 2018 Migrant Workers Scholarship is December 31, 2018 at 5pm EST. To find out more about the UFCW Canada Migrant Workers Scholarship program, or to apply for the scholarship online, visit www.ufcw.ca/migrantscholarship.
