Lunar New Year 2019 – Year of the Pig

Toronto – February 4, 2019 – On February 5, hundreds of thousands of Canadians across the country will celebrate the Lunar New Year – the Year of the Pig – by spending time with friends and family in numerous fun-filled activities to mark year 4717 on the lunar calendar.

The Lunar New Year starts with the new moon on the first day of the Lunar New Year and ends on the full moon 15 days later. The last day of the Lunar New Year is called the Lantern Festival, which is celebrated at night with various displays and children carrying lanterns in a parade.

Spring Festival, commonly known in Western culture as the Chinese New Year, is a very important cultural event for a growing number of Canadians and their communities.

Many UFCW Canada members will be helping to organize Lunar New Year events in their communities, and all interested members are encouraged to check their local union and municipal websites to find out more about how they can participate in this year's festivities.
