Tell Mama Earth Organics to respect workers’ rights!

A majority of packers, drivers and warehouse workers at Mama Earth Organics have voted in favour of their union, UFCW Canada. However, the company is using ballots cast by voters outside of the union’s bargaining unit to hold up the process. A company that cares about its farmers, the environment and its products should also care about its workers and should not be using anti-union tactics.

Mama Earth Organics prides itself on supporting farmers, protecting the environment, and delivering healthy organic food to customers. I am writing to you today because I am hoping you will extend this respect to your employees.

I recently learned that a majority of packers, drivers and warehouse workers at Mama Earth Organics voted in favour of unionization. This is great news! Unionization is imperative for any progressive company. Freedom of association and the right to collective bargaining are cornerstones of any workforce engaged in social justice, climate action, and food security.

Unfortunately, your company is attempting to scuttle the unionization process by adding office, clerical and managerial votes to the mix. This is unfair and undemocratic. The Ontario Labour Relations Board has a long history of certifying countless union bargaining units which do not include office, clerical or managerial positions.
This is because those types of jobs do not share the same community of interest with packers, drivers and warehouse workers. It would also create a serious conflict of interest.

I am aware that this is a common tactic of anti-union law firms. The law firm you have retained likely advised you to do this. Now, I am asking you to do the right thing. I urge you to agree to the union’s bargaining unit and respect the results of the ballot box. Ballots cast by individuals who do not share a community of interest with the packers and drivers should not be used to hold up the union process any longer.

Please do the right thing – agree to the union’s position and recognize the vote results.
