UFCW 175 member wins CLC / United Way Post-Secondary Scholarship

Kitchener, Ont. – July 8, 2019 – UFCW Local 175 member Meghrig Karamanougian is the 2019 recipient of the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC) / United Way Centraide Canada (UWCC) Post-Secondary Scholarship.

Sister Karamanougian has been a pharmacist assistant at a Food Basics pharmacy in Kitchener, Ontario for three years. This fall, she will be attending Wilfrid Laurier University as a full-time student pursuing a bachelor’s degree in mathematics. Her goal is to one day become a high school math teacher and support her future students to pursue their ambitions in community services and human rights.

According to the CLC and United Way, Meghrig was chosen for the award due to her compelling linkage “between unions, governments, and individual everyday actions (that can) challenge (right-wing movements) in Canada” and her ability to connect her experiences as an immigrant and the work of her union to the broader mission of the labour movement.

“Congratulations Meghrig on winning this renowned union scholarship, and thank you for being a valuable member of the union,” says Shawn Haggerty, President of UFCW Local 175. “We wish you all the best in your studies in the fall, and we know you have a bright future ahead of you,” he adds.

Each year, the CLC and United Way award a post-secondary scholarship to a member-activist from an affiliated union who is attending college or university. To learn more about the CLC / UWCC Post-Secondary Scholarship, click here.
