Health care workers at Christian Horizons join the union – UFCW 175

Greater Toronto Area – July 19, 2019 – Over 350 health care providers at Christian Horizons in Toronto, Richmond Hill, and Vaughan are the newest members of UFCW Local 175 after recently voting to join the union.

The Christian Horizons members provide support services to adults who require assistance in their day-to-day lives. The Toronto Central District employs roughly 150 full-time and 225 part-time plus relief health care workers. Employees work as Direct Support Professionals (DSPs), Developmental Support Workers (DSWs), and day-program co-ordinators.

Some of the concerns that led Christian Horizons employees to seek union representation include hours of work and scheduling, as well as pay issues surrounding breaks and lunch. In addition, seniority is another concern that employees want to address, particularly when it comes to favouritism and job security. Wages, benefits, and pension, as well as health and safety issues, were additional concerns raised during the unionization drive.

UFCW Local 175 organizers would like to thank the employees who assisted with this successful campaign, as their hard work and dedication made a huge difference. To read more about the breakthrough victory at Christian Horizons, click here.
