CUPE activist Lily Chang joins Team Unite CLC election campaign

Toronto – February 19, 2020 – The campaign to build the future of the labour movement is gaining more momentum as CUPE activist Lily Chang has joined Team Unite. Together with UFCW Local 832 Secretary-Treasurer Bea Bruske, who is running for president of the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC), and Alberta Federation of Labour (AFL) Secretary-Treasurer Siobhan Vipond, who is seeking labour’s support for executive vice-president of the CLC, Lily Chang is running for Secretary-Treasurer of the CLC as a member of Team Unite.

“This is fantastic news, and we are honoured to have Lily on the team,” says Bea Bruske. “Lily is an amazing sister and activist with a proud history of representing workers and more than a decade of experience as treasurer of CUPE's largest local union, CUPE Local 79.”

After graduating from the University of Toronto, Lily became a municipal social services caseworker where she saw firsthand the impacts of inequality on the families she supported. Chang also became a steward for her local union, and later was elected and served as Treasurer from 2005 to 2017.

Lily Chang continues to serve the membership as a Unit Officer and member of the CUPE 79 Executive Committee. She is also a member of the Executive Board of the Toronto and York Region Labour Council.

“I am thrilled to be part of a strong team with Bea Bruske and Siobhan Vipond, and I look forward to working with these two tremendous activists to help build a stronger future for all workers and families,” says Sister Chang.

Activists will vote for the next president, secretary-treasurer, and executive vice-president of the Canadian Labour Congress this upcoming May at the 2020 CLC Conventionin Vancouver.
