Food processing workers at Frulact Canada join the union – UFCW 1006A
Kingston, Ont. – August 14, 2020 – Food processing workers at Frulact Canada are the newest members of UFCW Local 1006A after recently voting to join the union.
"Unionizing gives us the power we need to bargain for the benefits we deserve," says new member Andrew Orendorff.
Based in Kingston, Ontario, the company processes and distributes dairy-based products, including yogurts, ice creams, smoothies, and baking products.
“This is an exciting and momentous achievement for the newest members at Frulact Canada, who showed tremendous courage and unity to achieve unionization,” says UFCW 1006A President Wayne Hanley.
The new bargaining unit consists of 51 workers. Key issues included scheduling and having a strong voice at work.
"Going union will help us bargain for better working conditions and allow the workers to come to work feeling more valued and appreciated,” says new member Keegan Compagnon.
The Frulact Canada members work in a variety of roles at the company, including Filling & Batching Operator, Quality Control Analyst, Logistics Operator, Shift Team Leader, Relief Operator, Fruit Room Operator, Maintenance Technician, CIP Operator, and Cleaner.
“We are looking forward to working with this dynamic and hard-working group to obtain the improvements they deserve,” says Lesley Prince, Director of Organizing for UFCW 1006A. "Congratulations and welcome to the UFCW 1006A family,” she adds.
