Agriculture workers at Lufa Farms join the union – UFCW 501
Laval, Que. — May 17, 2021 — Workers at Lufa Farms in Laval, Quebec are the newest members of UFCW Canada Local 501, following the recent certification of the new bargaining unit by Quebec’s Administrative Labour Tribunal (ALT). The application for certification was filed after a majority of workers at Lufa Farms supported representation by Local 501.
The new members work at Lufa Farms' urban greenhouse facilities. They chose to join UFCW 501 to gain better working conditions, stronger occupational health and safety, and a progressive, consistent wage schedule. In the coming days, a bargaining committee of experienced Lufa Farms employees and Local 501 negotiators will be formed to develop contract proposals.
"UFCW 501 fights hard to ensure workers in the agriculture sector enjoy good working conditions and respect in their workplaces. We are proud to welcome these new members at Lufa Farms,” says Alain Lachaîne, President UFCW 501. “By joining the union, these new members have improved their bargaining power and have a strong voice when negotiating their collective agreement.”
UFCW 501 represents 19,000 union members working at more than 410 companies across Quebec and northern New Brunswick. To learn more about UFCW 501 and its outstanding work, visit the Local Union’s website.
