S.A.M.E. Youth Tour Sweeps Ontario

Toronto – March 23, 2013 – The first week of the S.A.M.E. Tour 2013 across Ontario was a huge hit with thousands of students. The tour was launched on March 18, and coincided with Migrant Worker Awareness Week. Continuing through the week, ten S.A.M.E. (Students Against Migrant Exploitation) youth volunteers hosted awareness-raising seminars, videos, musical performances, and in-classroom projects to engage students about the challenges and hardships faced by migrant workers in Canada.

The first week of the tour took the S.A.M.E. message to students at campuses across southern Ontario including the University of Guelph, Brock University, Queen’s University, York, McMaster University, George Brown College, Sheridan College, as well as at a number of elementary and secondary schools.

"The response from the students has been tremendous," says S.A.M.E. co-ordinator and UFCW Canada national representative Pablo Godoy. "Students of all ages were asking us how they could get more involved as volunteers, or how they could open a S.A.M.E. chapter at their location."

"It shows that youth really do care about workers' rights, fairness and health and safety for everyone in their community."

The S.A.M.E. Tour 2013 continues until the end of the month. Now in its third year, and with chapters at a number of colleges and universities, S.A.M.E. has become Canada's leading student movement to empower and inform youth on issues about migration and migrant workers.
