Toronto – July 9, 2013 – UFCW and Unite the Union, the two largest private-sector unions in Canada and the United Kingdom, joined forces yesterday for a bold display of solidarity action against Ferrovial – the majority shareholder of Canada’s most lucrative toll highway – for its shameful disregard of employee health and safety rights.

Kicking-off the Canadian effort of the international campaign with two actions, activists from UFCW, Unite the Union and the USW, took the conversation directly to the public by unfurling banners at one of  toll-highway’s busiest underpasses during rush hour traffic. The stunt gained the attention of thousands of commuters on the 407 toll-road, who flashed their lights and honked their horns in support of Frank Morris, the Ferrovial employee who was blacklisted by the company for raising health and safety concerns.

The action over the 407 was preceded earlier in the day with a demonstration at the Ferrovial’s satellite office in Mississauga.

Activists from UFCW, Unite the Union, and other progressive allies are set to lead a number of similar actions over the next several days – including a mass demonstration at 407 ETR headquarters (6300 Steeles Avenue West, Vaughan) on Wednesday, July 10 at 8:00 a.m.
