Golden Boy workers vote "YES" to join union, UFCW 175

Golden Boy workers vote "YES" to join union, UFCW 175Toronto – April 15, 2014 – Employees of Golden Boy Foods in Toronto have voted overwhelmingly to join the union, UFCW Canada Local 175. The diverse membership at Golden Boy won their vote by more than 90% in favour of the union. The victory was the result of a strong, courageous and united campaign.

The workers began organizing the union out of concern about unfair treatment, lack of respect for seniority, and unjust terminations. Following the purchase of the facility by Post Foods more than three years ago, wages were frozen, health benefits were cut, and sick days were taken away. The lack of job security was another issue affecting both agency employees and long-time workers.

The workers at Golden Boy Foods produce and package peanut butter for local and international markets. The company is owned by the multinational Post Foods. Local 175 is Canada’s largest union local, building good jobs for members in virtually every aspect of the food processing sector.

“Congratulations to the new members at Golden Boy Foods,” says UFCW Canada Local 175 President Shawn Haggerty. “Their determination to join the union and win their certification vote so decisively is an inspiration to us all.”
