Ottawa food service workers vote to join the union, UFCW 175

Ottawa food service workers vote to join the union, UFCW 175Ottawa – May 10, 2014 – Workers at Healthcare Food Services (HFS) in Ottawa, Ontario are the newest members of UFCW Canada Local 175 after voting to join the union earlier this year.

HFS produces prepared and fresh food meals for healthcare facilities in Canada's National Capital Region. Local 175 organizing representatives worked tirelessly to support a strong and diverse committee of workers who led the successful effort to unionize.

The workers came together primarily to bring respect and fair treatment to their workplace. Having won the certification vote, the HFS members and their union will soon begin bargaining with the company to improve wages, fix scheduling problems, put an end to favouritism, and gain recognition for seniority.

"I would like to congratulate the new members at Healthcare Food Services in Ottawa," says Shawn Haggerty, President of UFCW Canada Local 175. "We are very proud of the workers for uniting together to build good jobs and establish better working conditions at HFS, and we look forward to negotiating a fair and competitive first contract."
