UFCW Canada backing brings new era in Nova Scotia politics

June 16, 2009 - A new era in Nova Scotia politics officially starts this week with the swearing in of Darrel Dexter as premier of the province — leading the first-ever New Democratic Party government in Atlantic Canada.

UFCW Canada played a significant role in last week’s historic Nova Scotia election that saw the NDP unseat Premier Rodney MacDonald and his Nova Scotia Progressive Conservative government.

UFCW Canada members, as well as National and Eastern Provinces Council staff worked on a number of successful NDP campaigns across the province. When the votes were counted, the NDP won 31 of 52 seats to form a majority government.

“The victory by Darrell Dexter and the New Democrats shows that the people of Nova Scotia were tired of the rhetoric of the old line parties. They believe that the New Democrats are the best party to manage the province’s economy particularly during these difficult times," says UFCW Canada National President Wayne Hanley.

“With an NDP government, the voice of working people and their families will now be heard and they will have a strong ally in Darrell Dexter.”

Dexter and his 12-member cabinet will be sworn in on Friday, June 19.

“UFCW Canada has a long and proud history of working with NDP governments throughout the country, “ says Hanley, “and we look forward to continuing that tradition with Premier Dexter and his government.”
