Beggs-Dowling-Mathieu scholarships awarded



Union benefits include much more than a contract and representation in the workplace. Those may be the fundamentals, but UFCW Canada strives to ensure that workers receive added value as union members, such as pension and other fringe benefits, lifelong learning opportunities, and one of the most popular member benefits, our annual scholarship programs.

The Beggs-Dowling-Mathieu Scholarship Program (named to commemorate the contributions of three of our union’s builders – William Beggs, Fred Dowling, and Roméo Mathieu), established by the UFCW Canada National Council is one of many opportunities available to post-secondary students who are members of UFCW Canada, or the children of members.

It consists of a $500.00 bursary awarded annually to 18 qualifying students across Canada on a regional basis.

Unlike many bursaries, there is no academic qualification for the award other than being enrolled in a recognized post-secondary program at the time of the award. Many additional scholarship opportunities are available from UFCW Canada local unions across the country.

"UFCW Canada is proud to be able to assist members and their families in the important area of higher education," says UFCW Canada national president Wayne Hanley.

"Education is increasingly important in trying to make a living, and comes with an increasing premium as well. Assistance is getting harder to find, and students need every bit of help that can be provided. UFCW Canada realizes the importance of this, and we feel duty-bound to assist members and their families with opportunities to improve their futures."


Winners of the 2006 Beggs-Dowling-Mathieu scholarships are:

• Shukri Abukar of Toronto is the daughter of UFCW Canada Local 175 member Mohamed Abukar (Avis Car Rental #1316). Shukri is enrolled in the Bachelor of Arts program at Glendon College, York University in Toronto.

• Lacey Appleton of Stoney Creek, Ont. is the daughter of UFCW Canada Local 175 member Harper Appleton (Coca-Cola Bottling, Hamilton). Lacey is studying Business I at McMaster University in Hamilton.

• Dana Lorraine Aquin of Edmonton is the daughter of UFCW Canada Local 1118 member Sharon May (Canada Safeway #822, Sherwood Park). Dana is in the fourth year of Human Resources at the University of Lethbridge, Edmonton Campus.

• Kim Bélisle-Duval of Montréal is the daughter of UFCW Canada Local 500R member Guylaine Bélisle (Métro #4405, Ste-Catherine). Kim is studying Communications at the Conservatoire Lassalle in Montréal.

• Darren Francis Brophy of Sydney, N.S. is a member of UFCW Canada Local 864 (Days Inn Sydney). Darren is in the final year of the Bachelor of Arts program at Cape Breton University in Sydney.

• Kaitlyn Croft of St. Catharines, Ont. is the daughter of UFCW Canada Local 12R24 member Barry Croft (The Beer Store #4099, Stoney Creek). Kaitlyn has just begun working on a degree in Social Sciences (Kinesiology) at McMaster University in Hamilton.

• Courtney Flame Culligan of Exeter, Ont. is the daughter of UFCW Canada Local 175 member Rosemary Rathwell (Cangro, formerly Kraft Foods). Courtney is enrolled in the Early Childhood Education program of Fanshawe College in London, Ont.

• Kevin Oliver Giles of Surrey, B.C. is a member of UFCW Canada Local 1518 (Canada Safeway #48, New Westminster). Kevin is working towards a Bachelor of Arts at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, B.C.

• Ashley Margaret Ingersoll of Saint John, N.B. is the daughter of UFCW Canada Local 1288P member Ann Doreen Margaret (Real Atlantic Superstore, Lancaster Mall). Ashley is enrolled in the Bachelor of Arts program at the University of New Brunswick at Saint John.

• Jennifer Catherine Labrecque of Calgary, Alta. is a member of UFCW Canada Local 401 (Canada Safeway #2211). Jennifer is in her third year towards a Bachelor of Social Work at the University of Calgary.

• Natacha Léger of St-Antoine-Abbé, Qué. is a member of UFCW Canada Local 500R (Métro Plus, Salaberry-de-Valleyfield). Natacha is majoring in Communications at l’Université du Québec en Outaouais in Gatineau, Qué.

• Anne-Marie Pouliot of Beauceville, Qué. is the daughter of UFCW Canada Local 509 member Monique Loubier (Plexiforme de Beauce, Notre-Dame-des-Pins, Qué.). Anne-Marie is enrolled in the veterinarian program at Cégep de Sherbrooke.

• Kristopher Roberts of Dorval, Qué. is a member of UFCW Canada Local 500R (Maxi Dorval). Kristopher is in his third year of studying Transportation Logistics at Cégep André-Laurendeau in LaSalle, Qué.

• Sondra Lyn Urquhart of Chatham, Ont. is a member of UFCW Canada Local 175 (Zellers Ambassador Plaza, Windsor). Sondra is in her final year of Honours Psychology at the University of Windsor.

• Krystel Vincent of Trois-Rivières, Qué. is the daughter of UFCW Canada Local 502 member France Vincent (Jean Coutu #46, Repentigny). Krystel has just begun studying Medicine at l’Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières.

• Melanie Lynn Wardell of Mount Brydges, Ont. is the daughter of UFCW Canada Local 175 member Barbara Lynn Wardell (A&P #119, London). Melanie is in her third year of a psychology/criminology BA at Kings University College at the University of Western Ontario in London.

• Michael William Webb of Abbotsford, B.C. is the son of UFCW Canada Local 1518 member Murray Webb (Canada Safeway, Abbotsford). Michael is in his final year of a Bachelor of Science program at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver.

• Deanna Lee Zanet of Trail, B.C. is the daughter of UFCW Canada Local 1518 member Sandra June Zanet (Trail Home Support/Alpha House). Deanna is enrolled in the University Transfer Studies program at Selkirk College, Castlegar, B.C.
