Doreen Doherty
Sister Doreen Doherty of UFCW Canada Local 1869 in Winnipeg has developed a simple yet effective way of marketing her passion – original watercolour paintings
– on the internet.
At www.affordablewatercolors.com her celebratory works such as Burst of Joy, above, are displayed in a simple gallery for all visitors to see, and even to purchase if they wish. The original works are available at low prices indicated on the site, and she has also developed a series of greeting and holiday cards that are used by Local 1869 in communications with its members.
Doreen began painting only a few years ago while she was undergoing treatment for cancer, and found the activity therapeutic in itself. Her works are being used by the UFCW Canada national women’s conference in 2006 and on other documents in preparation. In addition, she donated a sunflower painting for UFCW Canada’s annual leukemia gala. The sunflower was adopted by UFCW Canada in 2004 as a symbol of our members’ charitable efforts, representing warmth, hope, health, perseverance, resilience, and gratitude.
Doreen’s sunflower painting will be used as a fundraiser at the gala event. If you know of UFCW Canada members or staffers engaged in similar endeavours, please let us know at [email protected].
