UFCW Canada supports Argos’ anti-violence initiative


As efforts grow to stop the growth of gang violence in Toronto and other cities, UFCW Canada has joined together with the Toronto Argonauts, other unions, and various businesses to support community groups that can make a difference in areas where gang violence is on the rise.

The Argonauts football club got the ball rolling and created The Argos Foundation– Stop The Violence, receiving startup support from numerous sources, including $25,000 each from UFCW Canada and the Scotiabank Group.

UFCW Canada’s Bob Linton, pictured with Argos Head Coach Michael “Pinball” Clemons at the organization’s February kick-off, says UFCW Canada is proud to be a major sponsor of the Stop The Violence campaign.

During the media event, grants of $100,000 to fund four community-based groups were announced, and plans to commit an additional $500,000 in 2006 to programs being developed to bring constructive activity and meaning into communities hit hardest by gang violence.

“It is vitally important that young people in these areas be given alternatives to joining gangs and getting caught up in that way of life,” Linton says. “For UFCW Canada, it is another way we can directly help our members by helping their communities.”
