Missing and Murdered Aboriginal Women Action Card

Toronto – October 3, 2016 – The annual Sisters in Spirit vigils will once again light community spaces on the evening of October 4th throughout Canada. The Sisters in Spirit initiative, in co-ordination with the Native Women’s Association of Canada (NWAC), aims to raise awareness and investigate the extent to which indigenous women are murdered or missing throughout the country.

While the initial database results calculated at least 582 cases in existence, today we know the number encompasses more than 1,200 cases according to the previously released findings from the RCMP national report.

UFCW Canada and local unions have previously walked in solidarity at these important vigils. In addition to the public motions of support, people have also contributed online in lighting a virtual candle in support of Sisters in Spirit vigils on the NWAC website.

This October 4th consider participating in the Sisters in Spirit vigils and /or events taking place in your community.  Find out more information about Sisters in Spirit vigils and walk locations for 2016 online.
