First-ever virtual YIP series inspires new generation of UFCW activists

Toronto – September 10, 2021 – UFCW Canada recently concluded another successful season of the country’s leading labour training program for young activists – the UFCW Canada Young-Workers Internship Program (YIP).

Pivoting from the tried and true in-person model, which was postponed in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, UFCW YIP made a triumphant return this year by hosting a series of virtual, day-long sessions with young UFCW Canada activists from across the country.

Throughout the virtual sessions, members explored topics ranging from labour history to the importance of unions to politics and the media.

Participants were also asked to create an Instagram Reel or TikTok video showcasing their key takeaways from the YIP sessions as part of the inaugural UFCW Canada YIP Social Media Content Creation Challenge. The challenge winner, UFCW Canada Local 175 member Hayley Miller, used the opportunity to address misconceptions about unions that were discussed in her YIP session. The TikTok video has already garnered hundreds of views and can be found below.

“My union rep informed me about YIP, as I wanted to be more involved in union activities,” says Sister Miller. “It was a great session, and I’ve learned a lot of info that will help me in my role as a steward and beyond. I can't wait for the next one and hopefully it's in person,” she adds.

The next session of the 2021 UFCW Canada Young-Workers Internship Program will consist of alumni from previous YIP sessions as participants take a hands-on approach to politics and engage with other aspects of the labour movement.
