UFCW activists demand action on affordability crisis
Ottawa – November 29, 2024 – UFCW Canada activists joined hundreds of other workers on November 27 for the annual Canadian Labour Congress (CLC) Lobby Day. Workers met with elected officials from all parties, advocating for urgent action need to address the challenges facing Canadians today.
UFCW activists urged urgent action on crucial issues for our members: the affordability crisis, support for workers, and strengthening the health care system are top priorities.
The affordability crisis is affecting Canadians in every province as the cost-of-living skyrockets and wages are struggling to keep pace: Canada needs policies that prioritize working families and ensure the ultra-wealthy pay their fair share. “Workers are struggling to secure stable housing and make ends meet due to soaring prices for basic necessities,” said Shawn Haggerty, National President of UFCW Canada. “The government must take decisive action now to make life more affordable now, and help build a fair society where all Canadians can thrive.”
The rising costs, on everything, has imposed an immense strain on working families. Canada’s unions are urging the federal government to take decisive action to make life more affordable for Canadians.
“This isn’t just an affordability crisis—it’s an inequality crisis. Canadians are being squeezed from every angle, and the government has a responsibility to act now,” said Bea Bruske, President of the Canadian Labour Congress. “Housing, groceries, healthcare—these aren’t luxuries; they are basic human rights. It’s time for bold action to make life affordable and hold corporations accountable for their role in this crisis.”
In addition to calling for urgent action on the affordability crisis, UFCW activists called for government action to support workers, such as expanding EI access, and improving workplace standards and union access. Furthermore, the healthcare system must be strengthened and protected, with meaningful investments in public health.
