PetSmart workers join the union – UFCW 1518

Surrey, B.C. – May 8, 2025 – Workers at PetSmart in Surrey, B.C. have made history by becoming the first in British Columbia to join UFCW 1518, following a successful organizing campaign to improve wages, scheduling, and working conditions on the job.
The Surrey PetSmart workers organized to address issues including low pay, inconsistent scheduling, and lack of job security. They now join a growing wave of PetSmart employees across North America, including Toronto, Indiana, Texas, and Connecticut, who have unionized for a better future.
PetSmart Surrey workers are also part of a broader movement of retail workers—across bookstores, pet supply chains, and more—who are choosing union representation through UFCW Canada to build safer, more respectful workplaces.
UFCW Local 1518 represents more than 26,000 members working in the community health, hospitality, retail, cannabis, industrial, and professional sectors across British Columbia. To read more about UFCW 1518 and its outstanding work, visit the Local Union’s website.
