UFCW Canada signs onto Global demands for the protection and advancement of LGBTQIA+ persons across the globe
Toronto – June 16, 2025 – On this 50th anniversary of the G7 Summit, this week Canada is playing host to G7 leaders around the globe in Kananaskis, Alberta. Recently, a Pride 7 Summit was convened by Egale and Dignity Network. Out of this event came the Pride7 Communique, which calls on G7 leaders to act on key recommendations to advance LGBTQIA+ rights. These include rights that:
- uphold democracy, strengthen legal frameworks, advance human rights protections
- work towards peace, stability and humanitarian action
- advance economic sustainability, equity and climate resilience
UFCW Canada has endorsed the Pride7 Communique. We hold solidarity with organizations which fight to ensure that Canadian policies, laws and practices meet international standards and include G7 commitments to protect LGBTQIA+ people across the globe. We believe sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, and sex characteristics (SOGIESC) must be included in issues discussed at this Summit and must be financially and politically supported by G7 governments across the globe.
Furthermore, this July, the UN Human Rights Council will vote on whether to renew the mandate of the Independent Expert on violence and discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. As an Associate member of ILGA World and alongside many organizations worldwide, UFCW Canada is proud to sign onto a joint statement urging the Council to renew this mandate.
Since the creation of an Independent Expert on protection against violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) by the UN Human Rights Council in 2016, mandate holders have continuously documented discrimination and violence based on SOGI, advanced the global communication of these issues and held various country visits. UFCW Canada was proud to also support the 2022 renewal of this mandate and to support global activism amongst a rising tide of transphobia and LGBTQIA+ hate.
