July – Raspberry Moon (UFCW Indigenous Calendar)

Toronto – June 27, 2025 – As summer reaches its height, the arrival of the Raspberry Moon (Miskomini Giizis) brings with it teachings of kindness, care, and emotional awareness. This moon is a time of reflection, kindness, and emotional clarity. In Indigenous teachings, the raspberry—with its gentle texture and natural structure—symbolizes the importance of setting healthy boundaries and nurturing respectful relationships within our families and communities.

The Raspberry Moon reminds us that healing and growth often come from within, and just as the raspberry protects its fruit with thorns, we are reminded to protect our hearts with love, compassion, and wisdom. This is a time to care for one another, to speak with gentleness, and to offer support where it is needed most. The raspberry’s appearance in this season signals a moment for checking in—on ourselves, our loved ones, and the wellness of our communities.

This July, UFCW Canada celebrates and uplifts Indigenous voices, culture, and food sovereignty through meaningful days of recognition and learning. From bannock-making to treaty education, the spirit of Raspberry Moon flows through each observance, offering space for connection, celebration, and collective reflection.

Key Dates in July:

July 9 – Nunavut Day

Nunavut Day marks the official establishment of Canada’s newest and northernmost territory in 1993, following the signing of the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement. This day honours Inuit leadership and resilience, and celebrates the rich cultural heritage, language, and governance of Inuit communities across Nunavut.

July 10 – Anniversary of the 1827 Huron Tract Treaty

On this day, we remember the signing of the Huron Tract Treaty, a significant agreement that shaped much of what is now southwestern Ontario. Reflecting on this treaty provides an opportunity to engage with the history of land dispossession, recognize the enduring strength of the Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples, and advocate for the full implementation of treaty rights today.

July 25 – UFCW National Bannock Day

Launched by the UFCW Canada Indigenous Committee, the inaugural National Bannock Day is a celebration of the traditional Indigenous bread that has nourished generations. Bannock holds deep cultural and historical significance in Indigenous communities across Turtle Island. It is a symbol of resilience, adaptability, and community sharing. On this day, UFCW members are invited to reflect on the legacy of bannock, share recipes, host community meals, and honour Indigenous foodways as part of our collective journey toward reconciliation and respect.

The Raspberry Moon offers us teachings of kindness and strength—reminding us to honour our inner truths, maintain respectful boundaries, and support each other in healing and harmony. As raspberries ripen under the summer sun, may we, too, ripen in our relationships, deepen our commitments to reconciliation, and continue to walk together in understanding and solidarity.

The 13 Grandmother Moon Teachings shared here are inspired by Kinoomaadiewinan Anishinabek Bimaadinzinwin, Book Two by Arlene Berry. Teachings may differ across Nations and territories, each offering its own sacred understanding and wisdom.
