Ontario YIP session inspires the next generation of UFCW activists
Niagara Falls, Ont. – July 14, 2025 – The Young Workers Internship Program (YIP), UFCW Canada’s flagship training and empowerment initiative for young members, recently held its latest Ontario session in Niagara Falls. Designed to build leadership skills and strengthen the labour movement, YIP continues to inspire young workers from coast to coast.
During the intensive week-long program, participants from across Ontario took part in a variety of workshops and interactive activities focused on labour history, workers’ rights, organizing strategies, and social justice issues. A major highlight was the animated mock bargaining session, where members stepped into the shoes of both union and management representatives to negotiate a collective agreement.
“YIP has been a very educational and hands on experience,” says UFCW Local 175 member Caitlyn Derry. “We had a great group of people that made learning fun. What a great week – I highly recommend this program to anyone passionate about getting more involved in how a union works, and the benefits of being in a union.”
YIP remains a vital part of UFCW Canada’s commitment to empowering young workers and equipping them with the tools they need to become strong advocates in their workplaces and communities.
The 2025 YIP tour will continue across the country throughout the summer, with upcoming sessions planned in British Columbia and Quebec.
Since its launch in 2000, the Young Workers Internship Program has helped hundreds of UFCW Canada members connect, learn, and grow as future leaders of the labour movement. To learn more about YIP, click here. You can also follow the program on Facebook and Instagram.
