ACORN workers across Ontario join UFCW Canada
Toronto – October 9, 2025 – Community-based organizers in Ontario who work for ACORN, the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, have voted to join UFCW Canada.
The new members run community-based chapters in London, Hamilton, Toronto, Ottawa, Peel Region and other municipalities across Ontario. ACORN workers provide critical work to help empower low- and moderate- income people to take direct action against abusive landlords and corporations.
Many union activists and social justice advocates will recognize the famous red ACORN t-shirts at rallies, demonstrations and community organizing meetings. ACORN is a global organization of members who come together to fight back against landlords and corporations to build healthier, equitable communities. The workers who have voted to join UFCW Canada represent some of the most skilled, experienced and creative organizers of our movements across the country. The union looks forward to building on the Ontario victory by helping ACORN workers unionize across Canada. The new members at ACORN will be members of UFCW Canada Local 102.
UFCW Canada represents many workers in the not-for-profit, NGO and community-based sectors. Our members work at many progressive organizations, including: the Broadbent Institute, the Scarborough Campus Students Union, the federal New Democratic Party, Interval House, Brandon Housing First and Toronto Community Hostels. UFCW Canada extends a very warm welcome to our newest members at ACORN.
