November – Freezing Moon (UFCW Indigenous Calendar)
Toronto – October 29, 2025 – As the air grows crisp and frost begins to settle on the land, we welcome the Freezing Moon (Mshkawji Giizis). In many Indigenous traditions, this moon marks a time of preparation, reflection, and learning. It is a period when communities gather close, share teachings, and strengthen their spirits for the winter ahead. The Freezing Moon reminds us of endurance, gratitude, and the wisdom that comes from slowing down and listening—to the land, to the ancestors, and to one another.
November is also a month of deep remembrance and recognition, with several key dates honouring the strength and contributions of Indigenous peoples across Turtle Island.
Key Dates in November
Indigenous Disability Awareness Month – A time to honour the leadership, stories, and rights of Indigenous persons with disabilities, and to advocate for inclusion and equity across all communities.
November 7 – International Inuit Day – Celebrates Inuit culture, language, and heritage, while recognizing the resilience and knowledge of Inuit communities across the Arctic and beyond.
November 8 – Indigenous Veterans Day – Pays tribute to the many First Nations, Métis, and Inuit veterans who served with courage and distinction in Canada’s armed forces.
November 15 – Rock Your Mocs – A joyful celebration of Indigenous pride and identity, where wearing moccasins symbolizes unity and cultural pride.
November 16 – Louis Riel Day – Commemorates Métis leader Louis Riel, whose vision and courage helped lay the foundation for Métis rights and self-determination.
As we honour the Freezing Moon, may we take this time to reflect, prepare, and give thanks for the teachings that sustain us through all seasons.
The 13 Grandmother Moon Teachings shared here are inspired by Kinoomaadiewinan Anishinabek Bimaadinzinwin, Book Two by Arlene Berry. Teachings may differ across Nations and territories, each offering its own sacred understanding and wisdom.
